As the name clearly suggests, the sport of curling is an Olympic winter sport in which two teams made up of four players each compete to slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area, while also attempting to knock their opponents' stones out of the playing area. It may not sound like much on paper, but when you watch a live competition, it's surprisingly suspenseful! Here's why. When you hear "curling," your first instinct is probably not "exciting. You might wonder if it's just another sort of bowling or shuffleboard.But then, you watch a game and realize that the sport is entertainingly complex. Each team consists of four players, known as "rinks." Each team has one woman on the ice. The two rinks are divided by the scorer's circle, which is set up on either side of the sheet of ice. The curlers are stationed in front of this circle, while their opponents are positioned behind it. As the teams take turns sliding stones down the sheet, they are trying to make their opponents' stones move toward predetermined scoring zones along its edges ,where they will score points called "sisis. Stones also can score points if they "knock out" other stones. This happens when a stone hits the opposition's stones and displaces them from their resting places. You can probably see why we call it a sport for the thinkers. But if you're planning on taking any notes (and really, who doesn't like to jot down a few things during a curling match?), be warned: They might not do you much good. As in golf or pool, curling is one of those elusive sports that you need to learn by doing before your brain can truly grasp it and appreciate it (like snowboarding). The best way to watch curling is to sit down, relax and immerse yourself in the sport. More than likely, you will be hooked after just one game! Although curling is often perceived as an old person's sport, there is no upper age limit. Women and men compete against each other on the same teams, which means that you will see young Olympians competing against veterans who have been curling for decades. If you consider yourself a sports fan, you really need to check out this sport at least once before you die!
